Seascape Capital Client Event
Clients and friends of Seascape Capital enjoyed an evening with Mariana Budjeryn at the One Hundred Club for Seascape Capital's client event.
Monica explained how she met Mariana and subsequently invited her to speak at Seascape's client event at the One Hundred Club:
"I met Mariana on the plane returning from vacation. At the end of the flight, I had learned some very intriguing facts:
- She is an analyst, earned her PhD, and fought for her doctoral thesis topic that included analyzing the forces that led to Ukraine’s 1994 nuclear disarmament.
- She is Ukrainian and earned her BA in political science there.
- She has a book coming out in December, The Collapse of the USSR and the Nuclear Disarmament of Ukraine -- which I preordered as soon as the plane landed.
- Her 70-something year old mother, who remains in her homeland, is one of the many brave Ukrainians supporting the battle against the invading Russian forces. Now, mom isn’t on the front lines; she makes undergarments for the troops, but she is one strong thread in the larger fabric of the country’s tenacity. Her extremely accomplished daughter can describe the hand of that fabric at the granular level as well as from 1000 feet up — and in doing so weave in all the very important geopolitical implications.
Mariana's list of accomplishments is long:
Mariana is a Senior Research Associate with the Project on Managing the Atom (MTA) at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center. Formerly, she held appointments as:
- a Stanton Nuclear Security Fellow at MTA
- a fellow at Harvard Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies
- and as a visiting professor at both Tufts University and Peace Research Institute Frankfurt.
Mariana’s research focuses on the international history and politics of nuclear weapons and nuclear energy. Her research and analytical contributions have appeared in:
- Journal of Cold War Studies
- Nonproliferation Review
- Foreign Affairs
- Washington Post
- Boston Globe
- Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists
- Publications of the Woodrow Wilson Center where she is a global fellow
She is a regular contributor to CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, France 24, The Guardian, and other media that seek out her analysis on the war in Ukraine.
She IS THE expert you want speaking to you on this topic. We’re so grateful to spend the evening in discussion with Mariana and clients and friends of Seascape Capital at such a moment in time."
Mariana's book: Inheriting the Bomb: The Collapse of the USSR and the Nuclear Disarmament of Ukraine was published by John Hopkins University Press in December 2022.
